What Is Extended Star Topology With Diagram And Example

Diagram Of Extended Star Topology

Extended Star Topology is a type of network topology in which multiple star topology networks are connected through central switch/hub. Each connected star topology is connected through sub-hub switch to main central switch/hub as shown in the diagram.

This topology is a type of tree star topology.

If any network terminal (PC Or Mobile Device) becomes faulty, then other computers or devices will not be affected.

You can easily add and remove additional devices from the network.

Example Of Extended Star Topology:

Suppose there are 3 computer labs in a school.

The first computer lab has 5 computers connected through a switch.

The second computer lab has 10 computers connected through a switch.

The third computer lab has 15 computers connected to each other through a switch with one another.

Now all these three computer labs are connected with each other through a center hub/switch.

Each computer lab is connected in a star topology.

When all these computer labs connect, they form an extended star topology.

It is easy to troubleshoot network problems in the extended star topology because new network devices can be easily added and removed on demand.

This type of topology is best for large networks in schools, colleges, and offices.

If the central hub/switch fails, then the whole network will stop working. This is the main problem with extended star topology.

The installation process is also expensive, i.e., more network cables are required to add more network devices to this topology.

Extended star topology is best suited for large networks.

Small star topology networks can be combined with each other through a central hub/switch to make extended star topology networks.
